Vital Arts have continued their collaboration with artist Blaise Drummond and produced a series of stunning new prints. Following his first permanent commission in the UK at the Royal London Children’s Hospital, Drummond has created a series of delicately hand-embellished and collaged editions.
Drummond creates paintings and sculptural installations in which clean lines of modernism are frozen in time within serene and delicate landscapes. In Drummond’s work, modernism is recalled as a search for beauty, simplicity and a better way of life. In this striking series of three new editions, central elements from his installation at the Royal London Hospital are reconfigured to create individual scenes. Drummond’s work explores the representation of nature. In this series, printed wallpaper and reproduced depictions of landscape combine with watercolour and ink.
Historically, getting well and a process of recovery were bound up with experiencing nature: ‘taking the waters’ and seeking fresh air to heal body and mind. Drummond’s work at The Royal London Hospital is unexpected and unruly. A New Path to the Waterfall reminds us for a moment what it is to be in amongst the unpredictable and earthy forces of the natural world. In the context of a hospital s, Drummond’s work can perhaps provide people with the possibility of renewal and repair ever present in nature.
Blaise Drummond, born in 1967 received his MFA from Chelsea College of Art after studying at the National College of Art and Design Dublin and gaining an MA in Philosophy and Classical Art at the University of Edinburgh. He regularly shows with well established commercial galleries, such as Galerie Conrads, Dusseldorf; Loevenbruck, Paris; Rubicon, Dublin and has exhibited at the Stedelijk Museum; Irish Museum of Modern Art; Kunstmuseen Krefeld, Germany; Ikon Gallery, Birmingham; Santa Barbara Contemporary Arts Forum, California; Musee de l’Abaye Sainte-Croix, France; Musee Regional d’Art Contemporarin, Languedoc-Roussillon, France; Kunsthalle Whilhelshaven, Germany; Musee des Beaux-Arts, Nantes, France; Centre d’Art Meymac, France among many other venues.
Drummond was nominated for the Paul Hamlyn Foundation Award in 2003 and his work is held in many private and public collections including Deutsch Bank; The Irish Museum of Modern Art; Dublin, The British Council; The British Government Collection; Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool; Fond Municipal d’Art Contemporarain, Paris and others. His work appears in many publications, and has been reviewed in The Guardian, The Observer, Le Figaro, Liberations, Sunday Times Culture, Modern Painters, Beaux Arts, The Sunday Times, Art Review, The Irish Times, The Spectator, Circa, and others.
