Exhibition: Gaia Persico

Global Perspectives

Gaia Persico
Jul – Feb 2014/5
The Royal London Hospital Gallery

Gaia Persico draws or paints the various global cities she encounters through her “day job” as an airline stewardess. Whether picturesque or prosaic, Persico uses the given view, from whatever hotel room randomly assigned to her, as a consistent framework to depict each destination — whether Nairobi, Islamabad, Hong Kong, Mumbai or Los Angeles. These digital paintings and biro drawings on hotel letter-headed paper reveal the inherent differences, as well as common features, that the artist finds around the world.

We have gathered five digital paintings depicting Mumbai, Nairobi, Hong Kong, Islamabad and Los Angeles, as well as a series of biro drawings made directly onto hotel letter headed paper which record her observations, and what they might reveal to us.

Gaia Persico, who lives in London was born in Italy and studied at Wimbledon School of Art. She has exhibited extensively in the UK and abroad, including at the Royal Academy of Arts, Jerwood Space, PM Gallery, Gasworks, as well as in venues in Rome, New York, Tokyo, Istanbul and Wrocław.
