Creative workshops for children - National Portrait Gallery

The National Portrait Gallery delivered a two-year programme of brilliant, creative workshops for children at the Royal London Hospital and Newham Hospital. Children, young people and their parents explored inspirational stories of men and women from the National Portrait Gallery’s Collection and responded creatively. Drawings and photographs, poems and short stories inspired by the NPG Collection were used to create their own pictures.

Patients had the opportunity to work with artists from the National Portrait Gallery to create their own unique artists’ journals representing their interests, thoughts and ideas. The project explored the themes of identity and representation. Participants created their own investigative artists’ journal using themselves, their family, siblings, interests and the NPG Gallery Collection as source material.

The ongoing programme provided the opportunity for young patients to explore the magical, fantastical and mythical places and characters created by some of their favourite authors, whilst working with artists and photographers.

Outcomes and evaluation

The project enabled young people and their families to access the Gallery’s Collection and helps support health, wellbeing and happiness through participating in the workshops, and as a result of the workshops, an activity book was developed and is being distributed to young patients and their families through the hospital school and Play Department.

“Students and staff always look forward to the National Portrait Gallery visits. The ability of the artists and facilitators to promote learning through art always impresses. Sessions are lively, fun and definitely brighten our students’ days.”
