Spitalfields Music
The Song Weaver was the result of an ambitious new music residency with Spitalfields Music. Early years music specialists Zoe Palmer and Jack Ross, who delivered our popular Lullabies residency and Baby Bird’s Journey, returned to lead singing workshops in three areas of the children’s hospital; on the Neonatal Unit, on the Gastro ward and with children with a rare form of eye cancer (Retinoblastoma).
Outcomes and evaluation
Through this project, we improved the experience of being in hospital by providing fully inclusive, enjoyable and innovative ways of incorporating music into the day to day lives of infants and their parents/carers. The sessions were tailored to individual patient groups, ensuring each participant had an opportunity to engage, get creative and be stimulated. The sessions also provided fun, social opportunities and fostered a sense of community within the wards.
We produced a special CD of songs, specially composed for Speech and Language Therapists, with participating children and their families.
The CD is available from our shop for a suggested donation of £6.
The level of interaction from the musicians and the way they involved each child individually, yet as a group was brilliant. I loved seeing my daughter ‘snap’ back into her usual self – laughing, dancing and singing!
