Diversity, 2019

Vinyl, wood, acrylic paint and digital prints
Ambrose King Sexual Health Centre, Royal London Hospital

Design duo, Kapitza were commissioned to bring their bold, bright work to the newly refurbished Edwardian building, which houses the Ambrose King Centre for Sexual Health at the Royal London Hospital. For this project, the east London-based designers realised an ambitious, two storey artwork that runs from the entrance, into waiting areas and through corridors outside treatment areas. The installation, entitled ‘Diversity’, flows from a large painting in the main reception area, which is composed of a series of abstract geometric symbols, and acts as a keystone for the artwork throughout the service. Symbols from this central painting reappear throughout the building as repeating patterns in vinyl, wood and framed prints, accompanying patients as they move through the service. The dynamic graphics serve as an alternative system of way finding, reducing the need for excessive signage, and creating a harmonious and uplifting patient environment.

Studio Kapitza, which consists of sisters Nicole and Petra Kaptiza, have previously been commissioned by Comme des Garçons, Kew Gardens, Gucci, Clinique, Swatch, Ikea and the United States Postal Service. They have published several volumes on colour and pattern, and their work was included in the 2019 book, “Designs of our Time” by The Design Museum. In 2013 they were nominated for the Museum’s award, Designs of the Year.
