Exhibition: Oona Culley

Hannah Brown

Young Artists Present a Different View
Feb – May 2009
The Royal London Hospital Gallery, Whitechapel

Two new exhibitions, featuring work by emerging London-based artists Hannah Brown and Oona Culley, will open at Barts and The Royal London hospitals respectively on 26th February.

Oona Culley, whose previous commissions include work for Terminal Five for British Airways, has drawn on imagery from The Royal London Museum archives as well as her own photographs of trees around the hospital grounds to produce an intriguing site-specific commission. Using shadows and traces to explore elements of the local landscape, Culley’s immersive painted scheme subtly animates the Royal London’s linear gallery space with a sense of time unfolding along different scales, playing with perceptions of presence and absence, remembering and forgetting.

Oona Culley graduated from the Royal College of Art MA in Communication Art and Design in 2005. She was commissioned by Artwise in 2008, producing Where the Winds Blow, a series of digital art installations on glass screens for the Terminal Five lounges at Heathrow. Recent exhibitions include Shadows and Traces, a solo show at Hay Gallery, Colchester Institute in 2007, and Here, There and Everywhere, Leeds Met Gallery in 2008. Oona lives and works in London.
