Exhibition: Jochen Klein
Jochen Klein
Bringing the Outside In
Jun – Sept 2009
The Royal London Hospital Gallery, Whitechapel
Jochen Klein, who studied under Jem Southam on the photography Masters at London College of Communication, and who has a concurrent exhibition at the St Barts Gallery, photographs everyday materials in table-top arrangements which, from a distance, appear to be epic views of idealised landscapes. Works exhibited at The Royal London include a series produced in monochrome homage to Ansel Adams, The Romance of Contraband. By playing with our perceptions, he questions our expectations of the natural world, and our experiences of landscape.
Emerging London-based German photographer Jochen Klein graduated from the MA Photography course at London College of Communication in 2007. Since then his work has featured in three group shows: Salon08 in partnership with Matt Roberts Arts at VINEspace, Circles of Latitude, at Four Corners Gallery, London and The Royal Academy Summer Exhibition. This is his first solo show in London.
Renowned critic Richard Cork will be conversation with the Southam and Jochen Klein at Barts on Tuesday 16th June, exploring their personal approaches to landscape, and the impact of such images in a hospital setting.
