A hospital stay often causes anxiety and stress – particularly in children. The Vital Arts organisation, has made a it its task to change this. It commissions musicians, actors and artists to make the stay in hospital more pleasant for the patients. Fir the Royal London Hospital , five artists and designers were hired to enliven the wards. We show three works – starting with the wooden toys by designer Miller Goodman. With animal figures made of wood and geometric patterns, they decorate the walls of ward 7E.

“The piece has a huge amount of references that had been embedded in my memory for many years and came out all together at one time. So there are elements of circus, organic, art deco, Asian culture, Victorian architecture and the list goes on so a real mash-up that came out of my head onto paper and then onto the walls. The whole aim of the piece was to make a ward that would help to bring some joy to the young patients and parents with colour and some fun that would be warm and welcoming.” Morag Myerscough, Designer.

Instead of numbering the rooms of ward 7C, British designer and author of children’s books Chris Haughton decided to mark each room with a different animal. The respective animal motif can thus be found outside on the door, inside on the wall as a vinyl sticker, a framed print and a hand-woven carpet – behind the glass for reasons of hygiene. And in the hallway the elephant, cat, bear &co. appear to gather and wait for their doctor – in this case, a monkey! And an animal jazz band is entertaining the young patients in the playroom.
