Have your circumstances changed?

Artangel

As part of Artangel’s acclaimed production Have Your Circumstances Changed?, Vital Arts facilitated a series of cookery workshops at Mile End Hospital for men aged 65 and over. Taking place in autumn and winter 2014–15, the workshops explored daily routines, memory, and ageing through shared food preparation and conversation.

These workshops informed a powerful street-level performance by Artangel in June 2015. Set across a kitchen, living room, and bathroom, the piece examined the realities of ageing, shifting roles, and societal care through an intimate sound-led experience. The project raised timely questions about how we support people in later life - not just medically, but socially and emotionally.

You can read more about the final project, and watch the short documentaries created as a result of the project here.

Who is Artangel?

Artangel is a London-based arts organisation known for producing extraordinary, site-specific projects in unexpected places. Since the 1990s, they have commissioned and presented ambitious works by leading contemporary artists - often outside traditional gallery settings - in locations ranging from empty prisons to underground vaults, council flats, and public streets. Artangel’s work challenges conventions, fosters deep public engagement, and often explores urgent social, political, and personal themes.

Have your circumstances changed? was commissioned and produced by Artangel in partnership with Age UK Islington, St. Luke's Community Centre, Central Street Cookery School and Vital Arts. Supported by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation. Co-produced by Islington Council for the Word Festival

Artangel is generously supported by Arts Council England and the private patronage of the Artangel International Circle, Special Angels and The Company of Angels.
