A Route to Remember, 2016

Digital Illustration on re-enforced matte vinyl
Tayberry ward, Newham Hospital

This artwork was commissioned from Central Saint Martins graduates Jessica Hook and Florence Meunier, after A Route to Remember was selected as the winning proposal in collaboration between Vital Arts, the Newham University Hospital staff and CSM design students. The design had to cater to the needs of the older-adult patients and the students were specifically asked to bring colour and creativity to improve the overall wellbeing of the patients and staff on Tayberry Ward.

Jessica and Florence design for the better. A Route to Remember was created to be a journey, much like bus ride. The ‘routes’ run the length of the ward and mirror those of a hypothetical but familiar London bus route. The landmarks featured along the routes were chosen to encourage patients and visitors to reminisce about past trips and to encourage movement throughout the ward.

Both Jessica and Florence gained a BA in Graphic Design at Central Saint Martins in 2015. Since then, Jessica has gone on to work as a Graphic Designer for Unforgettable.org, an online marketplace of services and products for people with dementia and more recently working for CLIC Sargent – the UK’s leading cancer charity for the young. Florence is now continuing her studies at écal in Switzerland in Art Direction, where she is developing her type design and editorial skills, whilst pursuing personal and freelance projects.

This project was commissioned by Vital Arts and generously funded by  Barts Charity
