Peter Liversidge
Untitled (Birds), 2023
Collage of found National Geographic pages
Ground floor main corridor, Mile End Hospital
Peter Liversidge, who lives and works near Mile End Hospital, created a series of framed collages for the corridors of the hospital. Each frame contains an assembly of birds, gathered from various pages of National Geographic magazine, which serves as a source of inspiration to the artist.
Although vastly different in terms of breed, habits and habitats, the birds are all connected by shared branches within the collages. The repetition of images, and collision of species within the same space, creates a humorous–as well as uplifting–display of nature. Sited near the windows, it is hoped that viewers will draw a connection between the depiction of avian life and the visible garden outside.
Liversidge works across a range of mediums, including photography, sculpture, mail art, live performance, and film. His projects often begin as an idea written up on his manual typewriter, and these original proposals often feature in the finished artwork.
