Sun Shade is based on the artist’s suite of paintings created specifically for Vital Arts for The Royal London Hospital, which is his first public commission. Drawing inspiration from the British seaside, Sun Shade continues Anderson’s interest in creating a sense of place in his work, focusing on traditional landscape and the history of abstraction.
Hurvin Anderson’s vibrant paintings draw on the genres of still-life, landscape and portraiture to explore the way community and identity can be represented. Born in Birmingham to Jamaican parents, Anderson’s practice touches upon his Jamaican heritage as well as referencing wider art history. He has received international recognition as one of the more significant painters of his generation. Anderson had solo exhibitions at Tate Modern; Studio Museum Harlem, NY; the Dulwich Picture Gallery; Michael Werner Gallery, NY and David Risley Gallery, Copenhagen.
He has also been in included in group shows at the Museum of Contemporary Art, Chicago; Saatchi Gallery; Le Plateau, Paris; Arnolfini, Bristol; Chapter Gallery, Cardiff as well as many other international venues. In 2017 the artist received a nomination for the Turner Prize. His works can be found in the collections of The Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Tate Gallery in London.
