WHAT'S NEW
HOSPITAL REDEVELOPMENT

Vital Arts has managed an arts programme in the new Breast Cancer Centre in the West Wing at Barts hospital. The success of this programme is that it has created an environment that addresses the physical, emotional and spiritual needs of the staff and patients. The art is intended to provide the viewer with moments for contemplation, taking you away from the immediacy of the hospital by creating spaces that positively encourage distraction and discussion.

The art programme has been curated by Theresa Bergne of Field Arts Projects and developed in close consultation with patients and staff. It takes as a starting point the feedback that visitors would rather be "anywhere, but here". To this end the expression of landscape used as a starting point for all the art installed, offers an element of transportation, perhaps enabling viewers to think about being "somewhere else" if only in mind.

Barts and The London new Breast Care Centre has won the patient environment award in this year's Building Better Health Care Awards.
